Hernia Surgery
Specialist in timely and effective Hernia Repair
Hernia repair reinforces the abdominal wall to eliminate pain and prevent recurrence. Depending on the case and your specific needs, we can tailor the procedure by choosing an open or minimally invasive approach.

What is a hernia?
We call it a hernia when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weakened area of the muscular wall that protects the abdomen. This small bulge may contain part of the intestine or fatty tissue from the colon.
Benefits of Hernia Surgery
- Minimal scarring
- Outpatient surgery in most cases
- No recurrence
- Fewer complications
- Reinforcement of the area
99% effective and safe solution
Hernia repair surgery usually includes placing a polypropylene mesh, whose purpose is to reinforce the abdominal wall and minimize the risk of recurrence.
If laparoscopic surgery is chosen, we introduce special instruments through small incisions, which results in less pain, less inflammation, and faster recovery, allowing you to resume your activities with greater comfort.

What to expect from the procedure
- Evaluation
-
During the consultation, we will review your case in detail and explain all available options for your surgery. We will discuss the mesh to be used, its cost, and hospital alternatives, so you can make an informed decision. Pre-operative exams will be ordered along with an evaluation by an internist, in order to provide a personalized surgical plan, minimizing surgical risk and subsequent complications.
- Procedure
-
Elective surgery or emergency surgery. Hernia repair can be scheduled, and I will accompany you every step of the way, from planning to recovery. However, if the hernia becomes trapped or strangulated, emergency surgery will be required, where immediate intervention is necessary to prevent further damage. As a gastrointestinal surgeon, I have a team in the operating room that ensures every procedure is performed safely and pain-free for our patients.
- Mesh to prevent hernia recurrence
-
Surgical meshes are prosthetic material fabrics. These are designed to act as support in the repair of weakened or injured tissues such as hernias. The probability of a new hernia appearing after surgery with mesh is 1%, while surgery without mesh has a 30% probability of recurrence.
- Recovery
-
If the surgery did not require hospitalization, it means recovery will take place at home. For the first 30 days, you should avoid strenuous activities like lifting heavy objects; there will be designated periods for walking. Inguinal hernia: if you undergo laparoscopic surgery, recovery can be as fast as 2 weeks, much less than open surgery! I will be attentive to follow-up, and there will be postoperative appointments.
- Care and Diet
-
Diet: rich in fiber and with high water intake. Cleaning: keep the wound clean, perform dressing changes to prevent infections. Signs that the wound is healing correctly: It remains clean, heals properly, and the bulge caused by the hernia disappears. A progressive decrease in pain until it becomes almost imperceptible can be expected.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens if you have a hernia?
-
Over time, an untreated hernia can cause a visible bulge, dull aching, or sharp discomfort during daily activities. Because hernias do not resolve on their own, they require professional evaluation
- Can a hernia heal itself?
-
Once a hernia is diagnosed, it can only be treated surgically, since it is a mechanical problem.
- Can a recurrent hernia be operated on?
-
It is possible to perform revision surgery to provide a definitive solution.
- How do I know when I should have surgery?
-
The recommendation is to undergo surgery in a timely manner. Its treatment is a priority, as delaying it can increase the risk of complications. Some points to consider are: avoid surgery if there is an existing condition that causes coughing to prevent recurrence. An untreated hernia can become strangulated, affecting blood flow to the intestine and creating a medical emergency.
